The Pace Gallery Inaugurating New Space Beneath High Line with David Byrne Installation
The south side of West 25th Street between Tenth and Eleventh avenues in Chelsea is already home to two huge Pace Gallery spaces, and now a third is in the works. But before the blue chip gallery gets to building on its recently acquired lot at 508 West 25th Street, directly beneath the High Line—the same vacant lot where last year Rashaad Newsome and Maluca Mala filmed a music video—and directly east of its 510 West 25th Street space, Pace will use the lot as a public, outdoor venue for an installation by David Byrne.
Byrne’s temporary installation in the dusty lot, a giant, inflatable globe squeezed between the High Line’s pillars and titled “Tight Spot” (2011), will open on the evening of September 15 and remain on view through October 1, ArtInfo reports. The inflatable orb, which will be 48 feet wide and 20 feet tall, will be accompanied by a very low, vibrating soundscape, a distortion of Byrne’s voice.
During that site-specific public installation Byrne will also have work in The Pace Gallery’s Social Mediaexhibition (through October 15) in its next-door space at 510 West 25th Street—which, incidentally, was designed by the same architect who will eventually create the building that will fill the gallery’s new lot, gallery and art star favorite Bill Katz. What that building will look like or when it will be built is unclear—though presumably the gallery is anticipating being kicked out of its 545 West 22nd Street space when the Dia Foundation makes good on its plans to erect its new Manhattan home there—but this is how David Byrne’s giant inflatable globe will look squished under the High Line.
