Google has created a new image format called WebP
Compression is based on the same VP8 video codec that Google bought and open sourced back in May. They claim a 39% reduction in file sizes without a noticeable drop in quality. They’re working on a patch to bring native support to WebKit and will add alpha channel transparency later.
Certainly sounds promising.
